How to Discipline Your Toddler: No Spanking

How to Discipline Your Toddler: No Spanking

As a provider of childcare in Bronx, New York, we often have to deal with disciplining toddlers. Toddlers are in the stage where they begin to explore their feelings and boundaries of behavior. This can lead to aggressive behavior and tantrums. So, how do you deal with that behavior?

Some parents push for spanking or verbal abuse, but all it does is damage your child’s long-term physical and mental health. Here are some tips from the American Academy of Pediatrics:

  • Praise good behavior and ignore those you want to discourage. Redirect to a different activity when needed.
  • As tantrums are common, anticipate tantrum triggers, such as being tired or hungry.
  • Teach them not to hit, bite, or use any form of aggressive behavior.
  • Stay consistent with limits. Have short time-outs if needed.
  • Acknowledge conflicts between siblings but don’t take sides.

You must reinforce your child’s behavior with you at home, as well as their behavior when at school. Consistency will help make disciplining them easier, especially if you enroll them in a preschool in New York.

Make sure that your child is getting quality care and education by enrolling them in a head start pre-k, such as Sharon Baptist Head Start.
