Empowering Kids with Allergies to Take Action

Ensuring children understand how to respond when they have allergies is paramount for their safety and well-being. As your preferred head start pre-k in Bronx, New York, let us share some strategies to equip them with the knowledge and skills they need to act responsibly.

  • Start by explaining what allergies are and why they occur. Use age-appropriate language and examples to help them grasp the concept. Make sure they know which specific allergens trigger their reactions.
  • Teach children to recognize the symptoms of an allergic reaction, such as itching, hives, swelling, difficulty breathing, or stomach discomfort. Stress the importance of not ignoring these signs and seeking help immediately. Identifying signs or symptoms further supports their cognitive development.
  • Ensure they know essential emergency contact information, including their parents’ or guardians’ phone numbers, the phone number for 911 (or the emergency services in your region), and the contact information of any caregivers or teachers. If prescribed by a doctor, explain how and when to use an epinephrine auto-injector (e.g., EpiPen) and any other allergy medications. Encourage them to carry these items when necessary.
  • Teach children strategies to avoid allergens, such as reading food labels, asking about ingredients, and not sharing food with others. For environmental allergies, discuss ways to minimize exposure.
  • Encourage open communication with teachers, caregivers, and friends. An important aspect of language development helps them ensure they know how to explain their allergies and any specific needs to those around them.
